Two or three words before i talk about the book.
This is a very personal blog. These books are all in my shelves. Despite the fact that i want to show nearly all the photobooks i have, not everyone of them will be here. Of course , no time, no place , but also no will. What is the point of talking about something you are not really fond of?
Gustavo Aleman is a photographer and the founder of Fuego Books, a small, independent photo books publisher from south of Spain. We see so many ( good ) articles in the press today about Photobooks bubble, the future of photobooks, the golden age of photobooks…
I am no expert, in spite of what some people think. And i am certainly not a hard boiled collector ( «never do a second edition», ahahaha ). But i like books, and i try to buy as many as i can, too many already for sure.
I like Gustavo Aleman. I don’t know him personally, but I like his work, his way of making books, taking chances where there are few. With passion and ambition for photographers and books. He is not alone of course, there are lots of good names in Spain right now, and in the international «Best of books» lists.
But today , it’s Gustavo Day.

This is Christian Lagata’s first book. He is a young photographer ( Jerez de la Frontera , 1986 ), raised near the Rota U.S Military base, in Cadiz. A documentary as well as a personal work for Christian. The work shows the influence of the military base on the people and surroundings of Rota.
The book wears the colors of the American flag, red and white with a blue dustcover , showing the map of the base. Very nicely done. It is also divided in two parts, black and white photographs , taken by Christian outside the base, and colour ones, taken inside the base by friends or acquaintances, or directly from the Net. Two worlds divided by a fence.
The black and white images are lonely , filled with bits of observation towers, keep out signs. Scars, in the landscape and in the people. The U.S. base has intoxicated everything around, leaving visible and invisible prints, tattoos and cars. Beautiful, subtle and sad pictures under the influence of American photography, too.
The «inside» photographies are of everyday life in the base, training , line up, and family life. Powerful images of a life in a bubble. Another world, a different reality.
Lagata’s work is intimate, as much as it is documentary. The book is dedicated to his father, who lived in Rota. This is Christian story, a mixed one, as for all of us living between two worlds , two cultures. We are a sum of contradictions, between love and hate, respect and rejection.
Dos o tres cosas antes de hablar del libro. Este es mi blog personal.Estos son mis libros. Mi intención es presentar los libros de mi biblioteca, aunque no todos aparecerán aquí, por falta de tiempo , de sitio, y de ganas. Para qué perder el tieso hablando de lo que no me gusta.
Gustavo Alemán es un fotógrafo y el fundador de la editorial independiente de libros de fotografía Fuego Books, de Cadiz. Estos días están apareciendo muchos artículos sobre la burbuja de los libros de fotografía, su futuro, su edad de oro…
Me gusta Gustavo Alemán. No le conozco personalmente , pero me gusta su trabajo y su manera de hacer arriesgandose siempre. Su entusiasmo, pasión y ambición en pro de fotógrafos y libros. Ahora mismo hay muchos nombres muy buenos en España en fotografía, en las mejores listas internacionales de foto libros. Pero hoy, le toca a Gustavo.
Up around the Bend es el primer libro de Christian Lagata (Jerez de la Frontera, 1986) ).Publicado conjuntamente Por Fuego Books y Cuadernos de la Kursala, donde ha estado expuesto el trabajo.
Es un libro que tiene tanto de vivencia personal como de trabajo documental. Christian Lagata nos habla de la influencia de la base militar de Rota, Cadiz, entre la gente que ha vivido allí, como ha sido el caso de el y su familia, y las marcas , tanto físicas como psicológicas que ha dejado en su entorno.
Lagata distingue claramente dos mundos bien diferenciados, pero que llegan a ser porosos en muchos matices. Por un lado , fotografías en blanco y negro de Christian, sacadas fuera de la base, en su entorno mas cercano, familiares , amigos y conocidos.
fotografía solitaria donde se adivinan torres de vigilancia, señales de no acercarse, automóviles, cicatrices físicas o en el paisaje, tatuajes, marcas imborrables en la gente, evidencias. La base ha intoxicado la tierra y sus gentes.
Bellas y tristes imágenes, influencia también de la fotografía americana.
Otras fotografías en color, el mundo interior de la base. Son fotografías sacadas por amigos o conocidos de Christian , o recuperadas directamente de la Red.Nos muestran otra realidad, la vida diaria de la base. Entrenamiento militar, tropas formando, la vida familiar dentro de la base. Fotografías que ponen en evidencia el contraste entre los dos mundos. Una niña jugando en una burbuja, metáfora de ese mundo encerrado entre verjas.
El libro de Christian Lagata es a la vez documental e intimo. Está dedicado a su padre, que vivió en Rota. Es la historia de Christian, una historia enredada, como la de los que han vivido entre dos mundos , dos culturas. Una suma de contradicciones, entre amor y odio, respeto y rechazo.
Muy bonito trabajo de Lagata y Fuego Books.
