Shining in absence es un homenaje al historiador y archivista holandés Frido Troost desaparecido en 2013. Su archivo fue adquirido por el AMC poco antes de su muerte. Erik Kessels decidió entonces hacer una exposición en FOAM, Amsterdam, y editar este libro en 2015, con la colaboración de Kalev Erickson, de AMC y la comisaria e investigadora italiana Francesca Seravalle.

Este libro nos habla del espacio dejado por la ausencia de la fotografía, tanto como objeto y como concepto. Yo solo quiero añadir aquí el inalterable poder que tienen estas imagenes de «ausencia», precisamente, de hacer presentes a quienes han sido sus protagonistas, lejanos y desconocidos.

Un recuerdo para Barcelona hoy, sin mas palabras.

Algunas veces los libros de fotografía nos llevan mucho mas lejos de lo que pensábamos…

Ya he hablado aquí hace poco de Erik Kessels. Esta es su nueva publicación con la editorial francesa RVB Books, de Rémi Faucheux y Matthieu Charon.

Unfinished father es un homenaje de Kessels a su padre,víctima de un accidente cerebral en 2014. Aficionado a los automóviles , y particularmente a los Topolino, su padre solía restaurarlos. Pero su quinto Topolino quedo inacabado.

Las fotografías del libro son las del padre de Erik, Piet Kessels.

Kessels muestra su habitual ironía, pero esta vez es la ironía del destino, que pocas veces es lo que quisiéramos , o lo que habíamos previsto.Su padre, nos dice, no amaba las cosas sin acabar, a mitades. El Topolino , sin acabar de restaurar , es la metáfora de su padre , para siempre » unfinished» , inacabado. La historia de un hombre que nunca será completo.

Es un proyecto tan personal como inteligentemente en la linea habitual de Kessels. Un trabajo con múltiples lecturas, incluida nuestra propia intervención, con las pegatinas que nos da el autor, para «completar» lo inacabado. Kessels nos da todos los elementos para acabar la historia. Sabiendo que esa nunca tendrá el final feliz de las películas.

Kessels nos habla de su padre, de fotografía, de una pasión, del tiempo que pasa y deja su marca, y de nuestra propia condición de ser incompleto, con lo absurda voluntad de querer controlarlo todo.

Un libro lleno de fotos de automóviles muy entrañable.

A mi padre , por siempre «unfinished».

A collaboration between Kessels and Thomas Sauvin, with found pictures in Beijing, China.

Erik Kessels is a dutch editor. Born in 1966 in Roermond. He is a renown collector and curator. His communications agency, Kesselskramer Publishing, based in Amsterdam , was founded in 1996. Since then , he has published a considerable amount of publications ( among them , the series «In almost every pictures» ) and curated important exhibitions ( Foam’s inaugural in 2001, Arles » From now on in 2011…)

Me TV is a lovely little book. A woman in her sixties stands by her TV set. The scene is repeated 8 times with the same pose , the only change being the clothes she wears. It is surreal and funny , and weird too. We can imagine how proud the woman must have been when the photograph was taken. Having a TV set must have been a sign of modernity in China in the 80’s .

Both conceptual and documentary, the book is clever and witty. The spiral coil and inserted prints make it a really charming objet.

Three men named Erik want to meet , but never succeed…Kessels is in Nederland , Steinbrecher in Germany , and Van Der Weijde in Brazil. So they exchange pictures of tables where they could meet. 320 pages of tables…and still no encounter.
